Tile Calculator

Estimate tile boxes for floors and walls from surface size, tile size, box coverage, pattern, and a visible whole-box result.

Tile Inputs

Price field
Enter either tiles per box or box coverage. If both are filled, the box coverage path is used for the purchase calculation.
Pattern-based default waste is straight 10%, brick 10%, diagonal 15%, and herringbone 20% when the waste field is left blank.

Tile layout turns surface area into boxes

Tiles are individual pieces sold in boxes. The calculator starts with surface area and tile area, adds the allowance for the chosen pattern or your own value, then turns tile quantity into whole boxes. This is different from a flooring-pack estimate because tile size, cuts, borders, and box contents need their own check.

Tile calculation

surface area ÷ tile area = base tile countbase tiles + layout allowance = tiles, then round to whole boxes

Blank allowance values use a RoxyCalc planning default for the pattern. It is not a universal manufacturer recommendation.

Grout joints and coverage labels

Grout joints matter to the finished layout, but box coverage is the retailer’s product value. Check whether the stated box coverage already accounts for the joint system you are using. Borders, niches, and out-of-square walls usually require a separate cut allowance judgement.

Shade and calibre

Where a product has shade or calibre variation, buying enough at once can make matching easier. This is a product-selection consideration, not a hidden change to the tile formula.
