The difference between theoretical quantity and purchase quantity

Theoretical quantity describes material need; purchase quantity describes how that material is sold.

Start with the theoretical requirement

A calculation can produce 15.4 m² of flooring, 5.3 L of paint, 6.1 packs, or 37.4 m of trim. These values are useful because they show the underlying quantity before packaging and practical rounding.

Then apply the product unit

Suppliers normally sell unopened packs, boxes, bags, boards, sheets, and containers. A 6.1-pack requirement becomes seven packs; 5.3 L in 4 L tins becomes two tins. The result is not “extra math”—it is the real purchase decision.

Purchase rounding

purchase quantity = ceiling(requirement ÷ pack coverage or stock size)

Separate allowance from rounding

Allowance is a buffer for cuts, breakage, layout, or uncertainty. Rounding happens because products are sold in whole units. Keeping the two separate makes it easier to check the result and explain why an additional pack or board is needed.
