RoxyCalc Methodology
These are the formula families and assumptions behind the material quantity, purchase-unit, waste, and rough-cost results.
Common calculation sequence
Most RoxyCalc pages follow the same readable sequence: normalize the selected units, calculate the physical area or volume, apply the relevant project allowance, round to the way the product is sold, then show supporting values so the result can be checked. Optional price fields are applied after quantity rounding and are never used to change the material quantity.
The calculators use the measurements and options you enter. They check for sensible positive dimensions and recalculate from the current values. The core result does not depend on an account, saved project, supplier catalogue, or live product price.
Formula families
- Area materials: length multiplied by width gives the base area. Openings or deductions are subtracted only when the page provides that field.
- Volume materials: area multiplied by depth gives a volume. Round shapes use the circle area relationship before depth is applied.
- Pack and box products: required coverage is divided by the coverage of one pack or box, then rounded up to a whole purchase unit.
- Linear materials: the required run is adjusted for deductions and allowance, then divided by the selected stock length and rounded up.
- Repeated layout items: rows, supports, posts, rails, or fasteners are estimated from the spacing and count inputs, then checked against the physical area or run where the calculator supports both approaches.
- Rough cost: whole purchase units are multiplied by the optional unit price. A blank price leaves the quantity result intact and does not invent a currency value.
Waste and rounding
Waste is applied as an allowance to the base material requirement. When a page provides pattern defaults, those defaults represent a transparent starting point for straight, diagonal, brick, or herringbone layouts; users can replace them where the product or job requires a different allowance. Waste should be increased for complex cuts, curves, openings, stairs, borders, fragile materials, or uncertain measurements.
RoxyCalc rounds purchase quantities upward because suppliers sell whole packs, boxes, bags, containers, boards, or lengths. It may also round a loose item count upward because a fraction of a tile or fastener is not a useful purchase quantity. The raw area or volume remains visible where it helps the user sense-check the result.
Worked example: flooring packs
A 4 m by 3 m room has 12 m² of floor area. Applying 10% waste gives 13.2 m². If the product label says one pack covers 2.2 m², the purchase calculation is 13.2 ÷ 2.2 = 6 packs. If the result were 6.01 packs, the shopping quantity would be 7 packs, not 6.01. The label coverage, layout pattern, openings, and spare-board decision should still be reviewed before purchase.
What takes priority over a calculator
The exact product label and manufacturer installation instructions take priority over a generic coverage assumption. Site conditions, compaction, surface texture, substrate, drainage, structural spans, fire or wet-area requirements, local codes, supplier unit definitions, and professional advice can all change the appropriate quantity or method. RoxyCalc does not claim that a general quantity estimate is a structural design, permit approval, engineering calculation, trade specification, or safety certification. For high-consequence work, use the calculator only as a preliminary arithmetic check and have the final plan reviewed by the right qualified person.
