How to calculate paver base and bedding materials
A paved surface is a stack of materials. Counting pavers alone does not tell you how much base or bedding is needed.
Measure the surface area once
Start with the path or patio footprint. A 5 m × 4 m rectangle is 20 m². That area is used for pavers, base, and bedding, while each layer uses its own depth and material decision.
Layer volume
volume = surface area × layer depthFor 20 m² at 100 mm, base volume is 2 m³ before any compaction adjustment.
Keep compaction in the base calculation
If a supplier specifies an allowance or compaction factor for base, apply it to the base layer only. Bedding depth and paver quantity are separate results. Use the selected paver pattern to decide waste for cuts and edges.
Confirm the system before ordering
Drainage, subgrade, edge restraint, jointing material, base depth, and compaction vary by project. The calculator helps check quantities; it does not select the paving system.
