Bulk Material Calculator
Volume to order and rough cost.
Mulch / Soil / Gravel / Sand Calculator
Estimate bag or bulk quantities for common landscaping materials from area and depth. Choose the unit you want to order in and the answer will use that same unit.

Bulk material planning guide
Mulch, soil, gravel, sand, compost, bark, and road base are usually estimated by area and depth. The depth matters just as much as the footprint: doubling the depth doubles the volume.
Use this calculator when you know the surface area and target depth. It can help compare bagged products with bulk supplier units so you can decide whether a small pickup, trailer load, or delivered bulk order makes more sense.
Measuring tips
- Break irregular garden beds or paths into smaller rectangles and add them together.
- Use compacted depth for road base and bedding materials when compaction is expected.
- Add allowance for uneven ground, settling, and spillage during spreading.
- Check supplier unit definitions because bags, scoops, cubic yards, and cubic metres vary by seller.
The result is a material volume estimate. Drainage, compaction, weed matting, edging, and local delivery limits should be checked before ordering.
Worked example
A 6 m by 4 m garden bed at 100 mm depth is 2.4 m³. With 5% allowance it becomes 2.52 m³. If one supplier unit is 0.04 m³, divide 2.52 by 0.04 and round up to 63 units. Confirm whether the supplier quotes loose or compacted volume before placing the order.
Bulk material calculator FAQ
Why does the result follow the purchase unit?
The volume lines use the unit you choose for bag or bulk size, so litre, cubic metre, and cubic foot workflows stay easy to compare against supplier quantities.
Can I use this for gravel and road base?
Yes for basic area × depth planning. This batch does not yet model separate compaction factors, so it is best used as an estimate rather than a final delivery order.
