Fence Materials Calculator

Posts, rails, pickets, and optional concrete.

Fence Materials Calculator

Estimate a simple fence build from fence length, post spacing, picket width, gap, rails per bay, and waste allowance. Optional concrete-bag, fastener, and material-price fields add useful shopping context.

Fence Inputs

Optional concrete, fastener, and price fields
This page supports one gate deduction and one bags-per-post estimate. Check corner posts, gate posts, and custom post holes separately when the fence needs them.
Posts are calculated from the effective fence run after one optional gate deduction. Check end posts, corners, gate posts, and stepped sections separately before ordering.

Fence material planning guide

Fence estimates combine repeated parts: posts, rails, pickets or panels, fasteners, and sometimes concrete. The run length is only the starting point; post spacing, gate openings, corner treatment, and ground slope can all change the count.

Use this calculator for simple straight fence runs where you want a quick material list before pricing. Measure the actual fence line and separate gates, corners, and stepped sections before entering the main run.

Before ordering fence materials

This calculator is for quantity planning only. Boundary rules, permits, utilities, easements, and structural requirements should be checked before installation.

Worked example

A straight 30 m fence with posts at 2.4 m centres needs 13 bays, so the simple run has 14 posts before any gate or corner changes. If the form uses two rails per bay, that is 26 rail positions before allowance. Add the selected waste percentage and confirm the post layout against the fence height, wind exposure, soil, and gate design.

Fence calculator FAQ

Does the gate opening remove posts too?
The simple estimate reduces the filled fence run. Check custom gate posts, corner posts, and end posts separately before ordering.

Can I use this for concrete too?
Yes for a quick bags-per-post estimate. For bag-yield-based concrete math, use the dedicated concrete calculator as well.
